Appendix II StatisticsStatisticsLand Area and ClimateTaipei City became a centrally administered municipality under the Executive Yuan, R.O.C., in July 1967. After several boundary readjustments, the land area of Taipei City by the end of 2010 was 271.7997 square kilometers. The population density of the city is 9,635 persons per square kilometer, ranking second in the country, only 326 persons per square kilometer fewer than the population density of Kaohsiung City. Taipei City is located in the subtropical zone with year-round rain and no obvious dry seasons. The climate is usually damp and cold during the wintertime due to the influence of the northeast monsoon. The temperature rises during the summertime, since Taipei City is located in a basin that does not allow for regular ventilation. The mean temperature in Taipei City in 2010 was 23.3°C, which was 0.1°C lower than that of 2009. The highest and lowest monthly mean temperatures were 30.3°C in July and 16.9°C in January, respectively, showing a gap of 13.4°C. The annual number of precipitation days was 168 days and overall precipitation was 2,278.3 millimeters in 2010, which was a 36.49% increase compared to that of 2009.
Population ProfileThe registered population in Taipei City was 1.6 million when its urban districts were restructured and expanded in 1968. The population increased to 2.62 million by the end of 2010, roughly 1.6 times of that in 1968. The sex ratio (male/female×100) has gradually dropped to 93.09 by the end of 2010, and is the lowest among the cities and counties of the country. The female population exceeds that of the male population, which is similar to figures for Hong Kong, Singapore and Seoul, where the sex ratios are all lower than 100. In terms of age, the old age population has been increasing annually, while the young age population has been decreasing. By the end of 2010, the aging index reached 86.48%, higher than that of Singapore and Seoul, which are lower than 70%, and lower than that of Tokyo which is higher than 100%. The dependency ratio decreased to 37.61%, similar to that of Hong Kong and Singapore. Two factors influence the fluctuation of the total population, namely natural increase (birth and death) and social increase (immigration and emigration). Taipei City’s natural increase rate in 2010 was 1.20‰, a decrease of 0.38 point from 2009, and its social increase rate was 3.14‰. It is the first time the number of in-migrations exceeds the number of out-migrations since 2006.
